Top Tips for Write from Dictation in PTE Listening

Write from Dictation is the eight task type of the PTE Listening exam. Here’s how it works.

•  An audio recording of a sentence automatically plays seven seconds after you enter the page.
•  You must type the sentence in the space provided at the bottom of the page.
•  Your score in this task type is based on how accurate your answer is to the sentence recording.

Make sure you get everything down. Integrate the following tips into your PTE online course review efforts to get a high score in the listening exam’s Write from Dictation tasks.

1. Know how you are going to be scored.

PTE examiners determine the accuracy of your answers by considering the following factors:

•  The number of correct words in your answer.
•  The number of misspelled words in your answer.
•  The number of words that are absent in your answer.

If you misspelled or missed a word or two, points will be deducted from your score.

The partial credit scoring system applies to this task type. So, depending on your mistake, your grade may be reduced a full or a partial/half point. Want to learn more about what costs a full or a partial deduction in this task type? Ask your PTE online course review instructor.

2. Take down notes.

You have seven seconds before the audio recording plays. Make each one of them count. Prepare your pen and erasable noteboard. Jot down notes as you listen to the recording. Relying solely on your memory—no matter how sharp or accurate it is—can reduce your chances of acing this task type. Practice listening and writing at the same time during your PTE online course.

3. Listen and understand.

Don’t just listen so you can jot down notes. Listen to understand the meaning of the sentence. That way, if you find yourself missing a word or two when you review your answer, consider the message of the sentence. Guess the terms that best complete your sentence without compromising its structure.

4. Double-check everything.

Type as many words as you can recall into the space provided. Then, review everything. Check your spelling, spacing, punctuation, and grammar. If you know a word was mentioned in the recording but can’t quite recall how it goes in the sentence, take a guess. And, as discussed in the previous tip, make sure your hunch doesn’t interfere with the grammatical structure of the sentence.

Don’t confine your test training to your PTE online course review. Conduct self-study sessions. Practice what you’ve learned from your classes. Develop and refine your approaches to the various task types of the exam to achieve your PTE grade goals!
