Whether you’re going as a first-time or as a seasoned overseas Filipino worker (OFW), the tips below can help you adjust to life in the land down under.

1. Know which visa you should have
Make sure you secure the right visa before travelling to Australia. The Australian Embassy encourages applicants to submit their applications online. It’s easy. You just need to register, upload all the necessary documents, and pay using a credit card, PayPal, or BPay account.

Australia offers the following visa options:

          • Visitor
          • Student
          • Family and Skilled Migration
          • Workers
          • Short Stay Activity (for those who are going there for temporary work)
          • Transit (for those who are moving to Australia to enlist as a crew in a vessel)
          • Temporary Residents (due to cultural or social purposes)
          • Returning Residents

2. Master Australian currency
Australian dollars (AUD) is the national currency of the country. Bills exist in the following denominations: 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. Coins, meanwhile, exist in one and two dollar denomination and 5, 10, 20, and 50 cent denomination. Know that denomination is just the tip of the iceberg. Research about AUD. Determine how it differs from Philippine peso.

3. Learn Aussie slang
If you prepared with an excellent training facility, like the PTE review center in Makati, your English communication skills would definitely be enough to survive in Australia. Aussie slang, however, is more than just simple communication and will take a lot of getting used to, especially if you’re not used to it. Your PTE instructors will make sure of it. What they can’t prepare you for is the randomness of Aussie slang.

4. Always have a plan B
Unless you’re working there with someone you know, going abroad means you’re on your own. If something doesn’t go according to plan, you need to be smart enough to fix the problem or look for an alternative. Always having a plan B (and C) helps.

Let’s say your Australian friend or relative agreed to let you stay with them. Accept their offer (if it suits you) but don’t make them your only option. Look for other offers. Come up with a plan B. You don’t want to go on an impromptu rental hunt when you get there if they suddenly take back the offer.

5.  Pack the essentials
Before you add your favorite stuffed toy into your suitcase, make sure you’ve already packed everything you need. Do your homework. What’s the weather like in the city you’re going to work in? How much do products and services cost there (it varies on whether the place is a destination hotspot or part of a principal thoroughfare)? Don’t bring items that you can easily purchase in Australia.
